Astro Logical Musings Part I: Pluto, Neptune and UranusBy Arielle Guttman © 2005About once a year is all I can manage to battle with, or shall I say negotiate with, Kronos, for the time to commit to paper the constant stream of ideas that come in about the current Signs of the Times. So here goes, for 2005, with special thanks to those who keep e-mailing me, nudging me for some ideas about what the cosmos is up to. Here in Part I, the three outermost planets are covered – those of the transpersonal realm – and how they are affecting society and the world at this moment in time. Below you will find the chart for the current patterns at the time of this writing, c. Chinese New Year, Aquarian New Moon -- Valentine’s Day, 2005. Figure 1 -- Chart of New Moon in Aquarius
PLUTOPluto in the 3rd decan (10 degrees) of Sagittarius: Pluto, the planet of secrets revealed and shadowy operations exposed, continues to transit the third and final degrees of the sign of the Archer. Sagittarius has to do with aiming and reaching one’s mark, as its symbol of an arrow pointing to the heavens implies. It has to do with making journeys and therefore involves long-distance and foreign travel. It has to do with judgments made in the higher courts. It has to do with laws, lawyers and the legal system. It involves the educational process, especially institutions of higher learning. It concerns religious institutions, or more likely, religious leaders. And finally, Sagittarius has to do with the stage of evolution that takes us out of the personal, and out of the inter-personal, to the collective needs and concerns of humanity. Pluto will remain in Sagittarius until 2008. A number of bizarre images continue to prevail with Pluto in Sagittarius.
Okay, those are the headlines of the day. “So what else is new?” you might ask. How do we revision or maintain a higher vision of Pluto in Sagittarius, in the last chance we shall have in our lifetime for it to be there? It won’t pass this way again for another 250 years. At the heart of Sagittarius, Pluto takes us on journeys to new worlds, daring to take risks in unexplored territory, without fear, as this is the kind of adventure that Sagittarius most enjoys. We are manning missions to Mars and probing the deeper aspects of that planet quite seriously since the inception of Pluto in Sagittarius. Certainly the discovery and probing of new worlds exists collectively, but as above so below. It also exists in our own personal worlds.
NEPTUNENeptune halfway through Aquarius: The total time for Neptune in Aquarius is 14 years. We are at the halfway mark just now. In 2005 it will transit the 15th, 16th, 17th , and 18th degrees of Aquarius. Neptune in Aquarius comes to us collectively, as “What are the dreams we are dreaming together as a group?” As the projectionist who flashes images across the sky, Neptune’s stories often turn into the films and stories of the newsmakers and celebrities of the day. The Sabian Symbols of the degrees of Neptune’s transit often provide startlingly accurate pictures for our times, as Neptune, masked and costumed, dramatizes and often satirizes the themes of life. On the upside, Neptune allows us to dream and to imagine – not what is, but what can be. On the downside, Neptune can lead us down a deceptive road, where personal desires fall victim to self-unraveling, addictive tendencies, and the need for something or someone outside of oneself. When we dream of a better world or of a loving universe or of other unseen forces that guide and assist us – we are in the realm of Neptune. Because Neptune is in Aquarius, the sign of the collective humanity, the power to dream and make those dreams manifest succeeds muc better when thousands or millions of people are sharing the same collective dream. What can we focus on as our collective dream? You may meditate or pray or visualize or make affirmations for something all day long, but when you join with many others doing the same thing at the same moment, the power to be successful increases greatly. Neptune in Aquarius continues to allow us that privilege. Through the airwaves of Aquarius (an air sign, not a water sign as many believe), a shared belief or vision is circulated to millions, all at once. Airwaves are television and there is certainly one message being broadcast endlessly there at this time. Another set of airwaves is the internet where other messages are circulating at the speed of light. The power to attract that which we desire lies in sharing the dream collectively with as many others as we can. Aquarius gives us community, a social structure, our “preferred members and friends” – those we want to be a part of and feel like we are connected to. With Neptune there for the past 7 years and another 7 years to go, we are nourished by joining with others in intentional community, sharing and creating our collective visions with one another. Neptune at the 15th degree of Aquarius – January, October, November 2005 “Two lovebirds sitting on a fence” -- Jones* *The Sabian Symbols in Astrology – Marc Edmund Jones – Shambhala Publications, Boulder, CO 1969 The longing for love, marriage, and partnering is very clear here. It is highlighted in a number of ways during 2005, including Jupiter’s passage through Libra, and the node/eclipse cycle affecting Libra. Here, Neptune, the planet who gives us our human longings and desires, will break down barriers we might otherwise have in entering into the mating game – and accept a long-standing or sudden proposal. There is joy in the air here. Forget about feeling gloomy about what’s going on in the world, says Neptune, for this period. Put on your dancing shoes, sing or pray or chant to the high heavens – express your love of being alive and of the love you share with the other(s) in your life. But there is another aspect to partnering here. With the trine to Jupiter in Libra from Neptune in Aquarius most of 2005, it will be a revisioning of partnering that takes place. The shared visions and ideals of Aquarius are prominent, but most important is the entering into a friendship first, a mating second. We are up in the air, high on a wire together, voicing and chirping and singing our song together. We will be inspired to change the rules of the partnership game as they have always been handed down. These Neptune in Aquarius partnerships are not governed by the rules of traditional marriage as they’ve been handed down and acted out for centuries. Couples that are partnering now are motivated to create new role models for marriage and committed partnership. Neptune at the 16th degree of Aquarius -- February – July – August – September – November – December . “A big-businessman at his desk” – Jones* Much of Neptune’s dreams for this year, then, would seem to involve how savvy we can be in implementing our good business sense and skill in making it happen. Do the numbers add up? For business to succeed, numbers might have to be juggled. Business skills and past performance are taken into consideration. Spend some time working things out. Business and the economy figure in prominently here. News about sudden increases or decreases in financing the project come at just the right moment. Are you seeing all the hidden costs? The bid might tend to be low to get the job, but then careful and systematic attention to following it through could prove to be overwhelming. *ibid, Jones Neptune at the 17th degree of Aquarius -- March, July and August. “A watch-dog standing guard” -- Jones* *ibid, Jones Following the previous degree and then succeeding the previous degree as Neptune goes direct, then retrograde, then direct again, we have a cause and effect playing out. It seems as if, intertwining their energies together at this time, there is a businessman at his desk and a watch-dog who is standing guard over him. This can indicate the highest levels of corporate leadership or government leadership – the man in charge of everything, so to speak – that this image portrays. What exactly is his business plan and what exactly is being guarded by the watch-dog? It could certainly indicate a tendency to paranoia for the man at the desk about someone outside who’s lurking in the shadows, ready to steal something from the man. This is an image of a collective planet (Neptune) in a collective sign (Aquarius). It speaks of a collective feeling of paranoia about outsiders coming and potentially stealing something, thus the watch-dogs. The watch-dogs are in place, in greater measure than ever before. They are at airports, there are hidden cameras on the streets you walk down, in the grocery store aisles, in the shopping malls, and in school halls. On the other hand, this degree of Neptune warns us to not be negligent about our own wallets and paperwork. Become more vigilant about where you place your personal belongings, and I do mean personal, i.e., the items you would easily become humiliated about if suddenly the whole world were to see them or if someone were to steal them from your secret cache. It probably has more to do with paperwork or business plans and ideas than anything else, since it comes right on the heels of the big-businessman at his desk. And finally, Neptune will be at the 18th degree of Aquarius during April, May, June and July: “A man unmasked” – Jones* This is the juiciest and most frequented degree for Neptune this year, as it is the degree where Neptune turns retrograde, allowing us to see it from two different angles. Now, adding the other elements of Neptune’s transits this year, we have a fuller story, one that goes something like this: A big-businessman at his desk is guarded by a watch-dog to protect himself and his possessions, but is nonetheless publicly unmasked. *Ibid, Jones Sounds like a great movie, doesn’t it? We may be seeing this scenario all over the news this year, as it fits in nicely with the themes talked about earlier in this piece, about Pluto in Sagittarius. Stay tuned…Neptune is nothing if not intriguing. URANUSUranus in Pisces - 1st decan This is the one that really seems to be showing its colors across the landscape and in the media right now. It also correlates with the USA chart, which has just had its Sun progress into Pisces, where it will spend 30 years. Uranus spends only 7 years in Pisces, but it is already 1/3 of the way through at this time. I have been calling it the transit that broke the myth of the fish (Pisces being the fish and Uranus being that which shatters or breaks up old thought forms or structures). The aura of Pisces lingers, however. Just after Uranus leaves the sign of the fish (2011), Neptune will be right behind it to take its place (also 2011), until 2025-26. So, let’s make friends with the ocean and its inhabitants. Pisces is the sign that deals with the collective belief system of a nation, an ethnic group, or a family, herewith known as the “religion”. The last 3 signs of the zodiac all have to do with this feeling of the collective: It is about what we believe, based on what we were taught or what our family believes or what our community believes. Pisces is also the greater constellation or age that we have been a part of for the past 2,000 years and therefore, correlates with the timing of a new religion. The story of Jesus of Nazareth, his life, and his message -- are at the heart of it all. Also at the heart of it is the controversy presently being played out, about who was he really – what was his life like? – was he married? – did he father children? – and what parts of his life story are true or untrue as they’ve been told through the ages? This is the glass that Uranus in Pisces is presently shattering. The story is being retold because it needs to be retold. We are witnessing an explosion of books, films and articles now asking these very questions and determining to find an answer. There are 2 fish in the constellation of Pisces. There is a story or mythology of the past 2,000 years contained in one fish, and there now also seems to be another myth or story contained in the other fish. Revelations will be forthcoming, as the Age draws to a close. Uranus for these next 5 years transits Pisces and it is the shattering of outworn ideas that Uranus so effectively manages to bring us, that the whole story – the entire myth of the Age of Pisces is up for serious revision right now. The mutual reception between Uranus in Pisces and Neptune in Aquarius suggests the truth is out there somewhere – but it may take different eyes to see it. But there’s more for Uranus to shatter in Pisces than even that. “More?”, you might ask. What more could there possibly be? The fear, guilt and shame that have been a result of the teachings or doctrines of such institutions as it affects each person each day in their lives and in their minds. That would be a considerable task for any one to undertake alone, made easier and more accessible to all by Uranus’s presence in Pisces. Pisces is also represented as the sign that governs the oceans and you can bet there’s some turbulence in those waters. For instance, a tsunami -- and the reaction to the tsunami that recently affected the lands surrounding the Indian Ocean. The compassionate and humanitarian combination of Uranus in Pisces was at its all time best when a global outpouring of human beings engaged in compassionate and touching moments of charity and generosity to the areas most severely damaged. A sad story of death, loss, suffering and destruction turned into a hopeful story of people all over the world combining their efforts to turn their apathy, disillusion and disappointment with national and global politics into something where they could contribute to some good. Uranus also pointed humanity to an area of the world that needs friends and aid, with or without a tsunami or disaster, its everyday affairs are plagued by starvation, poor health care and economic tragedy. Uranus gives us the sudden twist of fate, the cosmic surprise or twister when we least of all expect it. But its after affects are usually summed up to an outcome that many consider to be a divine revelation. The ancients would say, “the gods” did it or made a statement or revealed themselves to us for some particular reason, usually to get our attention. The current population would ask, and many did ask, “Did God do this?” CNN aired a Larry King show whereby religious leaders from the world’s greatest religions were interviewed, with questions like, “Did God do this?” “What kind of God would do this?” “And what do you tell your people about why God would allow this kind of thing to happen?” -- bringing up references to Biblical prophecy of floods and revelations of apocalyptic visions throughout the discussion. Half the panel spoke of God as a bearded white-haired, white man up on his throne in heaven (thanks in large part to Michaelangelo’s painting of same in the Sistine Chapel), while the others questioned such a vision of God and told the viewing millions that we need to evolve our understanding of what and who God is. Still, as interesting and enlightening as this discussion was, and as clear as it became that there are these two world-views of God, I couldn’t help seeing Uranus in Pisces painting its slogan across the sky with images of giant walls of water, sudden death and destruction, biblical prophecy and revelation, and more. So, the questioning of beliefs such as what to believe in and who to believe will be with us during this transit of Uranus through Pisces. Reading elements of the Pluto transit earlier in this piece and the Neptune transit about a man being unmasked, all seem to correlate to this. Our three outermost planets are beaming pictures to us from the cosmos that can shed great light on the truth of what is going on. But not everyone is able to see past the structure and tradition of what they have all been taught and continue to teach (Saturn), and will choose to believe what they always have, regardless of new findings right before their eyes. Stay tuned to the planets and the pictures they paint, as they reveal their true colors on the landscape of current world affairs. Part II of Astro Logical Musings for 2005 will include: |
